"Chasing Cars"

(original song by Snow Patrol)

Here is a song I felt would work slowed down incredibly. The original version goes for bombast but I thought it might be more effective as an elegy. The tone throughout is from a Casiotone which has had an equalizer and distortion applied to it.

In terms of instrument layering, this cover was essentially conceived the way it wound up. I knew I wanted the limited percussive track, the spare guitar and the drone backing the vocals, and once they were together the song sounded complete so I didn't bother adding anything. I was a bit surprised at the length once it was finished, but it seemed like a natural fit.

You were surprised by the length at the end? Really?

But honestly, this is a good effort. The downplayed vocals were a nice touch, and the song first creeping along to the chorus and its general progression are nice touches. It shows an imaginative take on the song as opposed to the song as recorded.

The guitar going offbeat from the vocals in the closing minute is a great departure, an artful touch that makes the song more interesting.

May I suggest that your next cover be Julian Lennon's "Too Late For Goodbyes"? It's closer to your original concept of Yacht Rockers - though not exactly, of course - but mostly, I'd like to see what you could do with a song written by someone many consider to be the "lesser Lennon."

Another interesting option: Cover John Legend or R. Kelly. Your take on R&B might be interesting, and would provide a new genre for you to cover.

The former is simply a stellar songwriter in the field and a personal favorite. The latter's unusual phrasings and quirky sensibilities might give you some compelling material to work with.

Either way, you're more sparse and space-conscious take on either of these artists would be interesting.

For John Legend, I would suggest "Heaven." For R. Kelly, "Sex Planet."

Maybe "Happy Summertime"?
